Changes To Mexico, The Caribbean, Central And South America Bag Charges



American Airlines And American Eagle Before you head to the airport, please familiarize yourself with changes affecting checked bag charges.

Attention First and Business Class Customers
We are pleased to offer customers in First and Business Class the ability to check three bags at no charge when traveling on American or connecting with British Airways or Iberia.


Mexico to/from the United States, the U.S. Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, Canada, Europe, or India
Mexico to/from the United States, the U.S. Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, Canada, Europe, or IndiaCustomers who purchased Main Cabin tickets on or after February 8, 2012, may check one bag for no charge and a second bag for $40 USD each way within the size and weight limitations. Customers who purchased Main Cabin tickets prior to February 8, 2012, may check one bag for no charge and a second bag for $30 USD each way within the size and weight limitations. The changes apply for travel on American Airlines, American Eagle and AmericanConnection® flights. View a complete list of exceptions for passengers who are exempt from the second bag charge.

Between Mexico, the Caribbean, Central and South AmericaCustomers who purchased Main Cabin tickets on or after February 8, 2012, may check one bag for no charge and a second bag for $40 USD each way within the size and weight limitations. Customers who purchased Main Cabin tickets prior to February 8, 2012, may check one bag for no charge and a second bag for $30 USD each way within the size and weight limitations. Customers who purchased Main Cabin tickets between August 30, 2011, and February 7, 2012, may check one bag for no charge and a second bag for $30 each way within the size and weight limitations. Customers who purchased Main Cabin tickets prior to August 30, 2011, may check two bags at no charge within the size and weight limitations. View a list of South American cities. Canada to, from or through Europe and India
Canada to or from Europe and India OR Canada Connecting through Europe and India to another destination. Customers who purchased Main Cabin tickets on or after August 30, 2011, may check one bag for no charge and a second bag for $60 USD each way within the size and weight limitations. Customers who purchased Main Cabin tickets prior to August 30, 2011, may check two bags for no charge within the size and weight limitations. The policy applies when traveling:

  • Canada to or from Europe and India
  • Canada connecting through Europe and India to another destination

Customers may pay checked bag charges at an airport Self-Service Check-In machine, Curbside Check-In, or at the airport ticket counter.
