Pack your bags for an unforgettable South American adventure with your American Airlines flight to Lima. Walk the historic center of what was once the richest city in the Americas, explore the capital’s fascinating archaeological museums, and order fresh fish in one of the trendy cevicherias when you fly to Lima with American Airlines.
Explore the original city center from Plaza de Armas (also called Plaza Mayor), the birthplace of Lima, which reigned as the continent’s most influential city until its 1746 earthquake. You’ll see the Roman Catholic cathedral which houses the tomb of Spanish conquistador and the city’s founder Francisco Pizarro, government palaces, and colonial mansions and churches, some connected by catacombs.
Trace the art and history of Peru’s earliest civilizations up to the Inca Empire in the Museo de la Nación, one of the country’s most significant museums. Be sure to see the scale models of most of the major archaeological sites in Peru. Next, visit the Museo Arqueológico Rafael Larco Herrera, which boasts the largest collection of pre-Columbian art in the world.
Stop for lunch in an authentic cevichería. Each of these popular eateries specializes in fresh raw fish slowly marinated in lime or lemon juice and chiles, and served with toasted corn, sweet potato and raw onion. Wash the tasty ceviche down with a curiously neon yellow Inka Cola or an alcoholic pisco sour—the mouth-puckering national drink.
Head out from bustling downtown Lima for the neighboring seaside district of Barranco. Take a daytime stroll along tranquil streets that have long inspired artists and writers. After dark, watch this bohemian neighborhood transform into the city’s hottest nightlife area. At bar after bar you’ll find live Latin music, from creole and tropical to salsa and cumbia.
Climb your way along the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu, the “Lost City of the Incas” which stands at a stunning 7,970 feet above sea level. Long hidden from the world in the Andes Mountains, the citadel’s sacred temples, buildings and palaces are best viewed at sunrise.
Book your flight to Lima with American Airlines today to see some of Lima’s best attractions.
Follow American Airlines and go off the beaten path in Lima. When you’ve had your fill of the bustling Peruvian capital, head to Cusco, gateway to the Andes mountains and Amazon jungle, or join Limeños on the southern beaches of Pucusana or Punta Hermosa. American is with you every step of the way.
Take a tour to Cusco, the historic capital of the Inca Empire. Located in southeastern Peru, it became the seat of Spanish colonization in the Andes after 1532, and today is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Explore the Palace of Inca Roca and Koricancha, the San Blas neighborhood and the archaeological ruins surrounding the city.
Hop on a combi (minibus) with sun-worshipping Limeños to any of the southern beaches, most popular during the Peruvian summer from December to March. The most attractive are Pucusana, a small fishing village with small brown-sand beaches and calm waters around the harbor, and Punta Hermosa, with popular beachfront eateries serving delicious fresh local fish and ceviche.
Allow for at least a few hours to visit the pre-Columbian ruins of Pachacámac, the best preserved site within easy reach of Lima. If you had been an Inca conquering this site in the 15th century, you would have been arriving 1,500 years after the earliest constructions here. The Incas made Pachacámac one of the most important shrines in the Americas.
Take a combi or taxi to Pisac in the Urubamba Valley, also known as the Sacred Valley of the Incas. Bargain for your favorite ceramics or any of the intricate handicrafts in the colorful artisans’ market, busiest on Sundays with smaller outdoor markets on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Have lunch on the main square and then hike up to the Inca ruins above town offering magnificent panoramas of this charming Andean village.
Begin your trip to Machu Picchu in Aguas Calientes, the hot springs town that sits 3.7 miles below the famous “Lost City of the Incas.” Surrounded by tropical jungle, the small town, with simple hotels, restaurants and bars, was built around the railway that cuts through it. Arrive by train from Cusco and stay here for the night before hitting Machu Picchu at sunrise.
