Musical Instruments


XClose Checked
  • Musical instruments not exceeding 39in / 100cm in length can be checked in instead of a bag in line with the applicable checked bag allowance.
    Any checked baggage charges, such as the $50 second baggage fee for travel between Europe / India and the U.S., will apply
  • If you are checking in a musical instrument in addition to two bags, the relevant excess baggage fee will apply
  • Musical instruments over 39in / 100cm in length are considered as oversize, and are subject to the applicable oversize baggage fee
  • All musical instruments must be packed in a hard-sided case
  • All strings on string instruments must be loosened
  • American Airlines is NOT responsible for damage to checked musical instruments and has limited liability for loss
XClose Transportation Of Double Basses
  • Double basses are not accepted for transportation on all types of aircraft. Contact American Airlines Reservations for more details
  • Double basses are only accepted in the First Class cabin as carry-on
  • An additional First Class seat must be purchased at the applicable fare and a window bulkhead seat must be available, with the owner in the adjoining seat. This is not possible on certain types of aircraft. Contact American Airlines Reservations for more details
  • Alternatively, double basses can be checked in in line with the applicable baggage allowance. Any excess / overweight / oversize charges will apply
XClose Carry-On
  • Small musical instruments whose total dimensions do not exceed 45in / 114cm (length + width + height), may be carried onboard the aircraft, as the only item of your carry-on bag allowance
  • Length shall not exceed 22in / 56cm, width shall not exceed 14in / 35cm and height shall not exceed 9in / 23cm
  • Exception: guitars over 45in / 114cm can be carried onboard as your only carry-on item if there is room available to safely stow it in an overhead bin or approved stowage location in the cabin. Please ask at the check-in desk on the day of departure
  • All musical instruments must be carried in a hard-sided case

  • To carry on a cello, an additional seat must be purchased at the applicable fare. A window bulkhead seat must be available, with the owner in the adjoining seat. This is not possible on all types of aircraft. Additionally, a First Class seat must be purchased on some types of aircraft. Contact American Airlines Reservations for more details
  • The cello must be properly strapped by use of the seatbelt
  • Any excess / overweight / oversize charges will apply to checked cellos
  • For cellos over 100in / 250cm long, please contact American Airlines Cargo for shipping
  • The regular checked-in and carry-on baggage allowance applies to the passenger, even when an extra ticket is purchased for the cello
