American To Add Second Daily London Heathrow - Dallas/Fort Worth Servic

American Airlines has announced that it will discontinue service from London Gatwick Airport with effect from 13 April, 2008. American announced last year that from 30 March 2008 one of its two daily London Gatwick - Dallas/Fort Worth services and its daily London Gatwick - Raleigh-Durham flight would move to London Heathrow. The recent acquisition of an additional daily slot at London Heathrow makes possible the move to that airport of the second daily Dallas/Fort Worth service and the closure of the airline's Gatwick operations.

All American Airlines Gatwick-based employees will be offered alternative employment with the airline and discussions about future employment have begun with those affected. American currently employs 78 staff at London Gatwick.

American Airlines' transatlantic services from London will be focused on London Heathrow from where up to 18 departures a day will operate this summer to Boston, Chicago, Dallas/Fort Worth, Los Angeles, Miami, New York and Raleigh-Durham. American will also offer twice daily departures from London Stansted to New York JFK to serve the growing number of business and leisure travellers from the City of London and East of England using the Essex airport.

"With a number of our US competitors commencing transatlantic service from London Heathrow as a result of the US/EU 'Open Skies' agreement, it makes business sense to focus our efforts there," said Craig Kreeger, Senior Vice President International. "We are very sorry to be saying goodbye to London Gatwick after 26 years of service and we hope that as many of our employees as possible can make the move to Heathrow with us."

Daily services from London Heathrow to Dallas/Fort Worth and Raleigh Durham will commence on 30 March, 2008 and the second daily Dallas/Fort Worth service will commence on 13 April.
